The Ballparks
Before becoming baseball's Iron Man, Cal Ripken Jr. traveled a path familiar to generations of aspiring major leaguers. That journey took him through four minor league ballparks spread across the eastern United States, each representing a different step in his development from promising prospect to future Hall of Famer.
From Bowen Field in Bluefield, Virginia, where Ripken made his professional debut in 1978, to Miami Stadium in Florida, where he emerged as one of the Baltimore Orioles' top prospects, each stop brought new challenges and opportunities. In Charlotte, North Carolina, Ripken helped lead the Double-A Charlotte O's to a Southern League championship while playing at Crockett Park. Finally, at Silver Stadium in Rochester, New York, he completed the final stage of his minor league career before receiving his call to Baltimore in August of 1981.
These ballparks hosted thousands of games and countless future major leaguers, but each also played a unique role in the story of Cal Ripken Jr. While some facilities remain standing and others have long since disappeared, their place in baseball history remains secure.
The pages that follow explore the history of each ballpark, Ripken's connection to the facility, notable events that occurred there, and what became of the sites after professional baseball moved on. Together, they tell the story of the places that helped shape one of the greatest careers in baseball history.
